Meet the game-changing skincare product you need to try.

What is Emulsion Skincare?

In case you haven’t heard, our latest addition to the Rose Deep Hydration Collection is here—and it’s easily one of our most exciting innovations to date. Meet our Rose Deep Hydration Balancing Emulsion—a featherlight, milky elixir designed to deliver ample hydration without the added weight of a moisturizer. But what is an emulsion, exactly? And why should you consider adding one to your skincare arsenal? Keep reading to find out.

What are emulsions?

Unlike moisturizers, which tend to have a thicker and creamier consistency, emulsions are thin, fluid, and often have a milky appearance. Emulsions have been a highlight in Eastern skincare culture for years now, and they’re finally gaining some major traction in the Western world.

According to Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, what makes emulsions so unique and enticing is the fact that they’re formulated as an oil suspended in water, which creates a lightweight yet ultra-hydrating solution that sinks into the skin immediately.

“Given they are water-based, emulsions can offer a great lightweight moisturizing option to help hydrate the skin without feeling thick or greasy,” says Dr. Garshick. Rich in emollients, these products work similarly to moisturizers in that they lock in hydration and support optimal skin barrier health, but unlike creams, lotions, and even gels, they’re featherlight and liquified.

What skin types can benefit from emulsions?

Because they’re water-based, Dr. Garshick says that emulsions are especially ideal for those with oily and acne-prone skin, seeing as they’re extremely lightweight and help balance the skin’s oil-water ratio (which works to inhibit excess sebum production).

They also never leave a greasy residue behind the way that certain moisturizers have a tendency to do, making them a great option for anyone who can’t stand the feeling of heavier lotions and creams sitting on their skin. Additionally, they’re amazing for those with severely dry skin who could use an extra step between a hydrating serum and a moisturizing cream.

How should I use an emulsion in my skincare routine?

There are a couple of different ways to use this thirst-quenching formula in your skincare routine; it all comes down to your personal preference and what ultimately works best for your skin type. Because they’re so lightweight and fast-absorbing, emulsions are great for layering.

For added hydration, Dr. Garshick recommends applying your emulsion after a serum and before sunscreen or a thicker moisturizer. This method is perfect for those with drier skin types because it adds another layer of moisture so that water can’t easily escape.

On the other hand, those with combination and oily skin can treat an emulsion as their moisturizer. This means using it as the final step in one’s routine to lock in moisture and protect against water loss.

What emulsion skincare should I use for my skin type?

Regardless of your skin type, you can’t go wrong with our new Rose Deep Hydration Balancing Emulsion. That’s because it’s super lightweight, sinks into the skin immediately, and never clogs pores or feels heavy.

Featuring a powerhouse combination of damask rose extract, rosewater, low molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, and rose and yarrow extract, the gentle milky formula floods skin with essential hydration and nutrients while balancing the level of oil and water so skin is left feeling comfortable and healthy.
