“With Crème Ancienne, I was looking to create a formula that is extra rich and intensely nourishing. While doing research, I came across an ancient book that contained the formula for the world’s first cream, developed by Claudius Galenus, a 2nd century influential scientist and physician who created various balms used on gladiators. The formula was just what I was looking for: a balance of oils with an unusually small amount of water that creates a unique texture and protective barrier on the skin. We preserved the balance of the formula and managed to refine it even further with ingredients available today, including meadowfoam seed oil and chamomile wax. Because the heating temperatures of oil and wax are extremely challenging to control, we found a monastery to make the cream by hand in small batches, pouring each ingredient in a particular order and at a determined temperature. Meticulously handcrafted with a one-of-a-kind texture, Crème Ancienne creates a protective layer on the skin while minimizing the look of wrinkles for a visibly nourished, smooth complexion."
