NYFW On-the-Go Beauty with Stylist Liz Teich

Fashion Week may seem glamorous (and a lot of it is), but what you don’t see on social media and on blogs is that attending NYFW involves a lot of schlepping around the city on foot—sometimes from morning until night, and often in extreme heat and humidity (that’s September in NYC for you!).

Few New Yorkers know the Fashion Week grind as well as Liz Teich, who is an accomplished fashion stylist, the blogger behind The Brooklyn Stylist, and a mama (to her adorable one-year-old son Asher). Liz has been attending shows for a whopping 15 seasons now, and she always looks enviably fabulous during the most jam-packed days that take her from the playground to the runway and back again. We caught up with this fashion veteran to get the scoop on how she balances attending fashion week shows and events with styling shoots and writing for her blogwhile still managing to keep things fresh.

As a fashion stylist, how much are you usually involved with New York Fashion Week?

“I love seeing the shows in person, because it helps me get an idea of what to expect in trends and from particular designers for the upcoming season for my styling projects and for my blog. I also look forward to the events, networking and catching up with friends!”

“Between my blogging and editorial styling work, I can receive quite a bit of invites, but now that I have a baby, I’m a bit more selective about what I go to. I also sometimes opt to take styling work over going to events. It can be actually more work to run around the city and see all the shows, especially now that there isn’t one central hub for Fashion Week anymore (I’ve been going since the Bryant Park days!).”

How do you prepare in the days and weeks leading up to Fashion Week? Do you do any beauty prep?

“As soon as I get my invites, I try to start planning my looks and set them up in my office like I’m styling a photo shoot, although I have to be honest that I’ve been so busy that I am often styling them out at the last minute! For beauty, I schedule appointments for a haircut, hair color, and a facial a week or two before my first event. I make sure to stay hydrated, and stock up on easy snacks like Lärabars because it’s so easy to forget to eat and drink. My NYFW handbags tend to be smaller than my daily totes, so I pack them with just the essentials like Sugar Lip Treatments—my go-to lip product!”

We know that covering Fashion Week and attending events means long days out and about. What do you rely on to stay fresh and fueled-up all day and night?

“Since I live in Brooklyn, I’m usually out for the day once I’m at the first show; I may be gone from when I leave my apartment at 10AM until until all of my shows and events are over at 10PM. Coffee fuels me, and staying hydrated definitely helps. The energy of the shows and taking in the street style really inspire and motivate me.”

“I don’t have much time to spend touching up my makeup, so I’m excited to be able to refresh my makeup on the go with Vitamin Nectar Glow Water. As I mentioned earlier, Sugar Lip Treatments are my on-the-go essentials, especially for Fashion Week. I made the mistake of just wearing clear lip gloss one season, and looked so washed-out in the street style pics taken of me! I love my Sugar Lip Treatments because they’re colorful yet sheer enough that I don’t have to spend a lot of time making them look perfect.”

What are the top items that you stash in your bag during Fashion Week?

  1. “Sugar Lip Treatments, always. This season, I’m going to rotate between Poppy, Punch and Spice, depending on what I’m wearing.”
  2. “A backup phone charger”
  3. “A snack like a Lärabar”
  4. Vitamin Nectar Antioxidant Glow Water
  5. Citron de Vigne Moisturizing Hand Cream (lots of hands to shake while I network!)”
  6. “An Odeme compact mirror for touch-ups”
