“I was born with a birth defect in my leg that baffled doctors. To save my life and leg, they performed a procedure that left me paralyzed from the knee down. I was hospitalized for 11 months, and then needed extensive physical therapy for three years.
Today I am fine, but at age 14 I wanted to know if I would ever be free of the brace that I had to wear on my leg and hip. So I badgered my mother, who knew astrology, to teach me until she gave in.
Astrology can never give a firm yes or no to a question, but instead the astrologer puts the pieces of the puzzle together—my chart showed a good attitude of the patient (me), great family support, and a distinguished doctor. My outlook for recovery looked great—and I did recover. I feel my illness has made me a more compassionate person.”
Q&A With Susan
I became a professional astrologer when…
“…Time Inc. came to me to write an astrology column in July 1995. They wanted my pieces to be daily and short, but I wanted my pieces to be monthly and long—and I won. Astrology Zone was born on December 14, 1995 and changed my life. But no one ever grows up saying, ‘I want to be an astrologer.’ If you remember nothing else, remember this: No one actually chooses astrology. Astrology chooses you.”
The best advice I’ve ever received:
“My mother used to say over and over, ‘You will have one chance to make a good impression, not two. Be prepared!’”
My biggest inspirations are…
“…my readers, who are so excited when I post each month’s forecast. I look at their comments on Twitter the night after I post, and it makes all my hard work worthwhile. The second source of inspiration has always been my mother, ‘Little Mom,’ who taught me astrology. She passed away four years ago, but I remember all of her words. Her kindness, sensitivity to others, and incredible warmth touched me. As a mother, she set the bar high. She was very spiritual and philosophical.”
My favorite things to cook with my daughters Chrissie and Diana are…
“…a Grand Marnier soufflé for dessert, or for dinner, a cheese soufflé. I was like that girl from the movie about Julia Child, who went through her cookbook when she was 20. I taught myself almost all of her recipes and techniques. I particularly love her aromatic chicken tarragon recipe.”
The soundtrack to my life is…
“…’New York, New York’ by Frank Sinatra. It’s inspirational, motivating, and true!”
My Sunday skincare ritual:
“After my shower using Brown Sugar Body Polish, I use Sugar Face Polish. Then I do a steam facial for 25 minutes. After I put on a mask – often I use Vitamin Nectar Vibrancy-Boosting Face Mask. When it is time to wash it off, I hold the warm washcloth to my face for a minute or two. I also love to use Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask, Crème Ancienne Supreme Face Serum, and Black Tea Age-Delay Cream.”
I feel most Fresh when…
“…I apply a Fresh scent like Sugar Eau de Parfum or Fresh Honeysuckle Eau de Parfum. Scent is a big part of my life. It’s soothing, feminine, and soft – I don’t feel dressed without a scent.”
If I wasn’t an astrologer, I would be…
“…a nurse. I also love newsrooms, so my second choice would be a reporter who writes for a paper like The New York Times or The Washington Post. Still, the pull to heal and comfort others is stronger than to inform others.”
I dream of…
“…having a network TV show. I am also in the process of seeing another dream come true: we are building a mirror site to Astrology Zone in China that will be fully translated.
The questions my readers ask the most are…
“…about romance, career, and money. But having a baby has become the number one question readers ask about, for having a child has become a number one priority.”
